Buttonfix’s manufacturing partner, Cademuir Engineering, sets the standard with sustainable growth and employee-centric initiatives. One of the most impactful changes has been the installation of solar panels—an investment that made both environmental and economic sense for a company with high electricity consumption.
As Cademuir Engineering outgrew its previous premises, the company faced the familiar challenges of ageing infrastructure—poor insulation, substandard roofing, and a lack of efficiency. Instead of simply leasing additional space, Cademuir made the bold and forward-thinking decision to build a new, purpose-designed factory that would not only meet its expanding operational demands but also support long-term growth.
While environmental considerations were not the primary driver behind the move, the transition presented a valuable opportunity to embed sustainability into the very fabric of the company’s future. The new site, carefully chosen with long-term development in mind, came with strict environmental requirements—including compliance with Tree Protection Orders (TPOs). In response, Cademuir committed to extensive replanting, with new trees and hedgerows already transforming the landscape around the factory. These efforts underline the company’s growing dedication to environmental stewardship.
One of the most impactful changes has been the installation of solar panels—an investment that made both environmental and economic sense for a company with high electricity consumption. Supported by a grant from Scottish Enterprise, the solar array they have installed is forecast to generate 129 MWh of electricity annually, covering 29% of Cademuir’s energy needs in 2023. This shift to renewable energy has already delivered a measurable environmental benefit, with a reduction of 40,493 kg of CO₂ emissions—the equivalent of planting 2,450 trees.
The new facility has also been awarded an Energy Performance Certificate, confirming that it is built to support Net Zero targets. Further solidifying its green credentials, Cademuir has also achieved ISO 14001 Environmental Certification, reinforcing its commitment to responsible manufacturing practices.
But sustainability at Cademuir extends beyond infrastructure. The company has implemented a Cycle to Work Scheme, giving employees access to tax-free bike vouchers with repayments spread over several years. This initiative has not only promoted a healthier lifestyle but also encouraged camaraderie among staff, many of whom now cycle to work together.
In parallel, Cademuir continues to refine its production processes, with a renewed focus on reducing waste using granulated and reused plastics where possible. This practical approach to sustainability ensures in house high-quality tool manufacturing with a reduced environmental footprint.
As Cademuir Engineering looks ahead, its integration of sustainable technologies and employee-focused initiatives places it firmly at the forefront of responsible industry. By marrying operational growth with environmental consciousness and workplace well-being, the company sets a powerful example, proving that innovation and responsibility can, and should, go hand in hand.
In a proud moment for the entire Button-fix team, Deputy Lord Lieutenant of the London Borough of Islington, Paul Herbage MBE, visited the company to present the trophy and certificate.
